Selfless held its Global Health Leadership Awards to recognise the efforts of volunteers that had travelled to Bangladesh on the Elective Aid 2017 mission. The medical students worked with local healthcare providers to enable over 1000 people get access to free healthcare in rural Bangladesh.

The awards event took place at Putney Tandoori Restaurant and was attended by the Mayor of Wandsworth, Leslie McDonnell and Mr Jonathan Compson, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at King’s College Hospital and global health surgeon at Medical Aid for Palestinians.

The Mayor opened the event with praise for the dedication of the students and the valuable contribution they have made to the global health agenda. Mr Compson added that the global health opportunity that Selfless provided was excellent in preparing students for life as a doctor.

The night also celebrated the launch of the United Nations volunteering campaign #VolunteersActFirst a campaign for International Volunteer Day 2017.

Dr Na’eem Ahmed, of Selfless, said:

Selfless has been providing high-quality global health programmes for a number of years. The cohort of students this year have acted as exceptional global health ambassadors from the UK and awards are a recognition of their leadership.

Selfless will be continuing its work in enabling students to understand healthcare in low-resource settings and is currently considering applications from UK based students for 2018. If you would like to volunteer on Elective Aid 2018, please apply here.
